The Pathway to Positivity and Mental Wellbeing

Have you ever felt like things were so much easier or much more manageable when you’re in a good mood? Or how a problem that seemed unsolvable is suddenly not the “end-all-be-all” after a good night’s sleep? What about when you’re extremely anxious about a terrible situation and that one phone call to a dear friend makes you feel oh so much better? That’s all thanks to your mental wellbeing.

What is mental wellbeing, you ask? It’s a state of wellbeing in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.

Mental Wellbeing vs. Mental Health:

Aren’t they the same thing? Not at all! There tends to be a lot of confusion between the two, which is perfectly understandable. Your mental wellbeing is about your thoughts and feelings and how you cope with the ups and downs of everyday life. It’s not the same thing as mental health, although the two can influence each other. Long periods of low mental wellbeing can lead to the development of diagnosable mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression.

This is often caused by big life events that we have little or no control over such as bereavement, illness or redundancy. In these situations, it’s about how we respond – our behaviors and habits – that will determine the impact on our mental wellbeing. For example, do we tend to reach out for support or withdraw? Do we assume the worst or remain open to new opportunities?

Start making improvements today. Not sure where to start? We got you! Let us guide you through this process that we have customized and personalized just for you and your healing process.

1 – Resilience

What does resilience have to do with mental wellbeing? Simple! Mental wellbeing involves positive self image and esteem. Resilience, which is directly linked to your wellbeing, is all about having the ability and skills to cope with and adapt to new changes or situations.

Resilience is your ability to cope with change and adversity. But not only that, it is also your ability and capacity to bounce back from curveballs life throws your way. By strengthening your resilience, you’re better able to maintain good mental wellbeing through all of life’s ups and downs.

2 – Mindfulness

Paying more attention to the present moment can improve your mental wellbeing. This includes your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you. Some people call this awareness “mindfulness”. It can be so easy to rush through life without taking a moment to just stop and smell the roses, the coffee or the fresh air! Mindfulness allows us to see the present moment clearly and live in that precious moment. It can help you enjoy life more and understand yourself better. It can positively change the way you feel about life, the way you see yourself, and how you approach challenges.

When we are more mindful, or when we practice mindfulness, we begin to experience things in a whole new light, especially things that we’ve been taking for granted. Mindfulness also helps

you notice signs of stress or anxiety much earlier than you used to, in order to help you deal with them better.

3 – Meditation

Meditation is one of our key focus areas at Purisoul when it comes to your mental wellbeing journey. Meditation helps to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. This is often using breathing, quiet contemplation or sustained focus on something. For instance, an image, a phrase or a sound. This can help you let go of stress and feel more calm and peaceful.

Think of it as a mini-vacation from the stress in your life! Stress is your body’s natural alarm system. It releases a hormone called adrenaline that makes your breathing speed up and your heart rate and blood pressure rise. It kicks us into action, which may be a good thing when we’re faced with a real danger. But that “fight or flight” response can take a toll on your body when it goes on for too long, or is a regular occurrence.

Mindful meditation provides a method for handling stress in a healthier way. You can also opt for yoga. Yoga and tai-chi can also help with developing awareness of your breathing.

4 – Journaling

Journaling is a great and proven method that helps improve your mental wellbeing. It provides you an outlet to prioritize and materialize problems, fears and concerns. People tend to feel like problems are enormous and unsolvable when they’re just thinking about them over and over again. These fears or obstacles are currently thoughts. But once you write them down, they become real and something you can see on paper. Once it’s outside of your head, it becomes easier to understand what they really are. And most times, these problems, fears and concerns aren’t as big and scary as we made them out to be.

Journaling is also a great way to track any mental health issues that may arise or accumulate on a day-to-day basis, so that you can recognize triggers and learn ways to control them better. It also gives you a chance to express positive self-talk and identifying negative thoughts and behaviours that are the trickling droplets that lead to poor mental wellbeing.

Now I know journaling can be a bit intimidating for someone who has not practiced this mindful activity. Where do you start? How do you start? What should you be writing about? How will you fill this blank sheet of paper? I know, right? It can be a lot to take in. But don’t panic and don’t worry. At Purisoul, journaling is one of the critical aspects of your healing journey. We help you find the right type of journaling for you.

5 – Mental wellbeing at work

Many high achieving professionals like you have had their success disrupted after a life-changing event. We are taught how to acquire things in life, and not taught what to do when we lose them. And that’s very important, because we lose trust with the people we work with, we might have a loss of safety, or a loss of security.

This affects our mental state and our mind automatically tries to find solutions to the problem through logic. That leads you to the wrong tools for the job, and we’re here to give you the right tools – like breathwork, meditation and journaling – but the key is to be willing to put in the work.

6 – Good Mental Wellbeing

So, what does good mental wellbeing look like? Good mental wellbeing doesn’t mean you’re always happy or unaffected by your experiences. But poor mental wellbeing can make it more difficult to cope with daily life.

Good mental wellbeing is not the absence of negative thoughts and feelings. We all face difficult and challenging situations that cause us to feel angry, sad, overwhelmed and everything in between. Instead, it’s about being able to understand and manage those feelings, so that generally you’re able to feel confident in yourself, live and work productively, manage smoothly when big changes arise, and have a sense of purpose.

Western medicine has questioned the medical benefits of meditation.

Mental wellbeing is just as equally important to your overall health and wellness as physical wellbeing. It can be hard to maintain good mental wellbeing at all times, because there are curveballs that life can throw at you that may be out of your control. But you know what you can control? Your relationships, your physical health and wellbeing, and your emotional wellbeing.

We will be diving deeper into your emotional state and wellbeing in future blogs, so be sure to check in for more posts soon!

We always encourage our Purisoul circle to do what is right for them. The program is personalized to you and you alone. The life changing or big events that altered your success are more likely than not different from the big events in someone else’s life. And you don’t have to go all in all at once, not knowing what your body, mind and soul can handle.

To improve your mental wellbeing, always remember that you should try only what feels comfortable, to give yourself time to figure out what works for you, to go at your own pace, and last but not least, take small steps. Those small steps can lead to bigger successes and greater realizations. Remember, this is your healing journey, and Purisoul is here to guide your healing.

A Healthy State of Physical Wellbeing

Do you ever feel like a couch potato? Especially when you’re going through a rough time in your life? A big change in your life? Yeah? I totally get it. When you’re feeling like all hope is lost, all you want to do is wallow in your grief, sink into the pain and be glued to your couch or bed in the most comfortable clothes. It’s time to reject that feeling, that urge. Because guess what it’s doing to you? It’s deteriorating your physical health and regressing your physical wellbeing.

Physical wellbeing is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get the most out of our daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress. It’s also about ensuring health, avoiding preventable diseases and conditions, and living in a balanced state of body, mind and spirit. Physical wellbeing is important because it enables everything else. Research has shown that our physical wellbeing has an impact on conditions such as anxiety, depression, and on our stress tolerance and cognitive agility.

But physical wellbeing is much more than good health. It is the direct result of lifestyle choices and our behaviors around sleep, diet, physical activity, hygiene and relaxation that achieve or derail optimal functioning. Do you wake up full of energy and optimism for the day and feel confident about your ability to handle whatever comes your way? Or are you often distracted by pain, headaches, discomfort, and fatigue? Maybe you struggle to complete tasks because you feel foggy or run out of steam. Physical wellbeing drives all of that. But after this process, you can start to regain your physical wellbeing. It’s time to throw out those worn in sweatpants or pyjamas and trade them in for your favorite confidence-boosting activewear.

1 – Movement

Moving your body and fitting in regular exercise into your routine has many benefits including strengthening your muscles, which improves stability, balance and coordination. Movement helps build more durable bones, encourages flexibility and range-of-motion which boosts joint flexibility and joint function. Improves your heart health and your cardiorespiratory endurance.

Pilates addresses the underlying structural imbalances in the body which create pain and difficulty with movement. Pilates helps to retrain dysfunctional movement patterns in the body and eventually restores optimum physical function. Research has proven that Pilates is the only movement practice that heals, strengthens and relaxes the body simultaneously.

The best thing about Pilates is that it’s for everybody, regardless of gender, age, race, size, ability or current fitness level. Other than scientific-based research, this is a big contributor to why it’s been integrated into our Purisoul healing program.

2 – Breathwork

We provide scientific methods in our physical wellbeing sessions that can help you reduce stress in the moment. If you practice it regularly, you may also find that it helps you feel calmer generally. The more you practice, the more effective this breathwork technique becomes.

Breathwork helps put the brakes on acute stress responses and diverts health problems associated with chronic stress. Deep breathing helps you get the lymph flowing properly so that your body can work more efficiently. It also helps control stress levels and the “fight or flight” response that can interfere with everyday life and stand in the way of achieving your goals.

3 – Be Accountable

Accept the fact that you and you alone are responsible for you. No more blaming others for allowing you to wallow in your grief. No more blaming the world for the loss you’ve experienced. No more letting the change control your life when you can take control of that change and find the positivity in the pain and come out through the other side a much stronger person.

At the end of the day, you are the one making the decisions regarding your physical wellbeing. And the first step is holding yourself accountable for your choices. Make that choice to focus on getting back your physical wellbeing and stick by it, day in, day out.

4 – Be Patient, Be Mindful

Patience. This is the harder part. Unfortunately, things don’t always work right away or right off the bat. Healing, even physical, takes time. Physical wellbeing isn’t a goal that’s achieved overnight. Purisoul’s program is customized to your own healing process for a reason.

Mindfulness is the first step to improving your physical wellbeing. Ever heard that phrase “it’s all in your head”? Well, that’s because it really is. Your thoughts shape your actions. A sudden change is something that happens and is unfortunately out of our control. But what we can control is how we react to it, how we let it affect us and what we’re willing to do to overcome that change.

5 – Physical vs. Mental

Looking after your physical wellbeing is not only important for your physical health itself, or because good physical wellbeing will benefit your academic performance. Your physical wellbeing and your lifestyle will also have an impact on your mental wellbeing.

Physical wellbeing is about being safe, sheltered and in good health and it is closely connected to mental wellbeing. Without physical wellbeing, you cannot have mental wellbeing. Your relationships, your career and your finances can be negatively impacted. You will be constantly sidelined by your health and not be able to be a full participant in your own life. If we have good physical health, we will automatically experience better mental and emotional wellbeing.

On the other hand, mental stress and anxiety will put stress on internal organs, increase blood pressure, decrease immune function and upset chemical balances. This is something we’ll be

diving into a little deeper in our next blog so be sure to keep a lookout for more helpful insights behind the purpose of Purisoul.

With scientific methods like breathwork and movement, you can start to feel more fulfilled, flexible, and energized! There’s a sense of assurance in the fact that it’s a process with clear action steps in a customized and catered solution to each individual. Because we all go through our own life changes. A process that works for you might not work for me and vice versa. Remember, it’s not a one-size-fits-all program, it’s a fit-for-you program.

Through your journey, we take a good look at your current physical wellbeing and through scientific methods aim to get you to where you want and need to be. Live an active lifestyle. Live the life you’ve dreamt of living but never got around to realizing. This is your time. Are you ready to embark on this healing journey?

Social Wellbeing

Do you feel like no one understands what you’re going through? Me too. Do you feel like you’re all alone and there’s no one to turn to? Me too. Do you feel like you just don’t want to interact with anyone else and shut yourself off from the world? Me too! You know what? We need to snap out of that state!

Too often it’s easy for us to turn off the world when we’re going through hard times in our lives. It’s easy to isolate. It’s easy to avoid people. It’s easy to put yourself down even more than you already are. Do you know what’s not easy? Building long lasting strong and solid relationships with the people in your life. So strong that they are the ones that pull you off that couch, lend you a shoulder to cry on, and stand by your side on your healing journey – your social wellbeing journey.

The “Social” in social wellbeing:

Social wellbeing is the sense of belonging to a community and making a contribution to society. It is our ability to make and maintain meaningful positive relationships and regular contact with other people in our world – family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.

Good social wellbeing includes not only having relationships but also behaving appropriately in these relationships and maintaining acceptable social standards. Our relationship with our family, the basic social unit, impacts our life the most.

The “Real” in relationships:

Do you schedule time with family and friends? Do you enjoy spending time with others? Do you interact with a diverse range of people – people from other cultures or backgrounds or people whose beliefs differ from yours? Are your relationships rewarding? Are your relationships positive? If the answer is no to any of these questions, it means that you need to work on an area of your social wellbeing.

People with high social wellbeing see the value in living in harmony with others and developing healthy behaviors. They seek positive, interdependent relationships with others. We build our social wellbeing by interacting with people around us. These interactions involve using good communication skills, creating and maintaining meaningful relationships, respecting ourselves and others, and creating support systems (with family and friends).

It’s only natural:

Social wellbeing, along with physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, contribute to good health. When we experience unease or nervousness in social situations it can be easy to assume that you have social anxiety. This can sometimes be very distressing as human beings are innately social creatures. We live together in groups, clustering in cities and towns with families and friends. Wanting to feel connected and be around people is a natural impulse. Our health can be fundamentally influenced by the quantity and quality of our support networks and social connections.

Unwavering support:

You are who you surround yourself with. I’ve heard that phrase too many times to count. But I have to agree with the people who have shared this piece of advice with me. You need that support that family members and true friends can provide.

As humans, we are mutually dependent social creatures – we need to love and be loved. We have a need to belong, and we feel good when we share our experiences with others. The relationships we cultivate are essential to our health and happiness or, in other words, our wellbeing.

A sense of community:

Social wellbeing is strongly linked to social inclusion and a sense of belonging. In our society, a connected person is a supported person. Social intelligence factors – like our emotional intelligence, moral code, upbringing, and ability to adapt – all help cultivate social wellbeing, as do things like trust, freedom and equal rights. Social wellbeing is also influenced by our lifestyles, value systems, belief and traditions.

Whether it’s your local charity association or community theater center, being an active part of something bigger than yourself can give you that boost of self-worth, confidence and that sense

of purpose. Purisoul helps improve those traits and senses, contributing to your overall social wellbeing. Purisoul becomes the connecting link between you and your community.

We guide you towards outlets in your community that help you build healthy connections with your community. It’s time for you to gain back your sense of belonging, your connection to your community, and regain that feeling of happiness, enjoyment and confidence. With Purisoul, disconnect is a thing of the past.

Social wellbeing in the workplace

Have you ever heard someone say “I’m here to work, not to make friends”? Have you said it yourself at one point in time? People who say this are one of two things: they’re heavily introverted or they simply aren’t aware of the value of having friends at work.

Having little to no social support or feeling lonely is linked to severe health concerns like high levels of depression, high chances of getting sick and high blood pressure. Individuals who have close friends at work are seven times likely to feel more engaged in their job and their work environment. A good social environment at work contributes to improving your overall wellbeing.

When it comes to the workplace, we can apply social wellbeing to relationships with colleagues and managers. We can apply it to company values and corporate social responsibility, to social inclusion, a sense of belonging, and feeling valued as a person, colleague and employee.

When we’re going through a life-changing event, we often feel isolated from the world around us, detached from our community and that “me against the world” mentality kicks in. If I can relate, there are a million others who can too. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We often feel alone because we isolate ourselves from our loved ones, thinking that they can’t possibly understand how we feel or what we go through. With this program, you don’t have to anymore.

Social wellbeing completes Purisoul’s 360° circle of wellbeing. For more insight on physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, read our previous blog articles. Overcoming life-changing events and achieving overall wellbeing cannot be fully realized without addressing all 4 elements. Purisoul can be your guiding light, leading you throughout your healing journey.

The 360 Degrees Cycle of Wellbeing

Change is a little scary, am I right? It doesn’t matter if it’s a good change or a bad change, if it’s an expected change or a sudden change. It’s inevitable, and that’s what makes it a little scary. And when the change comes, do you deal with it or do you run away from it? Wouldn’t it be easier to just ignore it and go about your life like everything’s normal?

I know I’ve run my fair share of miles away from the changes in my life. But when I stopped running, they were right behind me. We all have to stop running away from change eventually. But how? How do you deal with changes in your life? The big life-altering ones. How do we heal? Enter the 360 degrees cycle of wellbeing. The cycle is made up of 4 crucial elements: physical, mental, emotional and social. So, if we were to break down the cycle and sneak a peek at each element, what would that be?

1 – Physical

When we are affected by trauma in our lives, our physical health takes a hit as well. I’m guilty of being a couch potato when I’m going through a difficult change in my life. Can you relate? Okay, good. For a second I thought it was just me. But after this cycle, it’s time to throw out that old couch and trade it in for your favorite activewear.

With evidence-based methods like breathwork and movement, you can start to feel more fulfilled, energized and back on top of your game. The best part? It’s a process with clear action steps in a customized and catered solution to each individual. Because we all go through our own life changes. A process that works for you might not work for me and vice versa. It’s not a one-size-fits-all program, it’s a fit-for-you program.

2 – Mental

Many high achieving professionals like you have had their success disrupted after a life-changing event. We are taught how to acquire things in life, and not taught what to do when we lose them. And that’s very important, because we lose trust with the people we work with, we might have a loss of safety, or a loss of security.

This affects our mental state and our mind automatically tries to find solutions to the problem through logic. That leads you to the wrong tools for the job we’re here to give you the right tools – like breathwork, meditation and journaling – but the key is to be willing to put in the work.

3 – Emotional

Emotions, especially painful ones can be triggered by any of the wide range of life-changing events. Whether it’s moving to a new country, settling into a new job or career change, a change in financial circumstances, the tragic loss of a loved one, a divorce, or an end to a long term relationship, change can be difficult to process and at times painful to even think about.

Our most natural and human instinct is to suppress emotional pain. To bottle it up and throw it out into the ocean. It’s easier to ignore it. And when we try to deal with the pain that’s in our heart, we often rely on logic to help us heal. That approach can do more harm than good. When we fight pain with logic, it actually leaves us in a place where we feel stuck, confused and overwhelmed. I’ve felt my share of confusion, paired with a lot of emptiness, and I definitely don’t want to go down that emotional rabbit hole again.

It’s time to get out of that cycle of being stuck over and over again. Through multiple evidence-based methods, such as movement, emotional healing or trauma recovery, it’s time to release that emotional weight and baggage you’ve been carrying around for too long.

4 – Social

Do you feel like no one understands what you’re going through? Me too.
Do you feel like you’re all alone and there’s no one to turn to? Me too.
Do you feel like you just don’t want to interact with anyone else and shut yourself off from the world? Me too!

We guide you towards outlets in your community that help you build healthy connections with your community. It’s time for you to gain back your sense of belonging, your connection to your community, and regain that feeling of happiness, enjoyment and confidence.

Through this journey, we take a good look at where you are right now – physically, mentally, emotionally and socially – where this change has taken you to, and where it is really that you’re stuck. We help you move forward so that you can finally live a more peaceful life and achieve the goals that you’ve been dreaming of and putting off for quite some time.

This journey starts and ends with you. This is your journey, and we’re here to help you navigate through it – healed, empowered and ready to go back to what makes your soul happy.

Embracing Emotional Wellbeing

When we talk about health and wellbeing, most of us think of our bodies and physical health. There is no doubt that a healthy body is vital to our wellbeing, but there is another important part of our overall health – our emotional wellbeing. Emotional wellbeing is a positive sense of wellbeing which helps you and gives you the ability to function in society to meet the demands of your daily life.

We can get stuck in negative cycles where negative thoughts reinforce negative feelings, which in turn produce negative actions. We can struggle to get a “handle” on unpleasant feelings and may even feel like the unpleasant feelings are “spiraling out of control”. When we struggle to deal with our unpleasant feelings and can’t seem to “bounce back”, we are experiencing poor emotional wellbeing. When we have poor emotional wellbeing, we are also more likely to develop symptoms of psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety.

The phrase “emotional wellbeing” typically brings up pleasant associations such as excitement, happiness, love, and acceptance. However, how we handle unpleasant feelings we experience is actually the most significant indicator of our emotional wellbeing.

1 – The Dark Side of Emotions:

2 – The Feeling of Movement

Emotional wellbeing is both correlated with and distinct from physical wellbeing. What you put in your body reflects on your emotional state and in turn highly affects your emotional wellbeing. I love comfort food as much as the next person, but make sure to incorporate clean or healthy food into your nutrition plan.

In addition, your body needs to rest and recharge. Lack of down time or sufficient sleep can have a big impact on your emotional wellbeing. Ever wonder why you feel so heavy with worry one night and wake up the next morning feeling a little – or a lot – lighter? Rest and relaxation has a direct link to your mood, so give your body – and heart – the rest it deserves.

Moreover, and I can’t stress this enough, get moving and stay active. Not only does it help manage your stress, but it releases the dopamine (that rush you feel after a good run!) that promotes good emotional wellbeing. Movement is the key. Whether it’s a jog around the block, a pilates class, a yoga session, dance lesson, or a bike ride. As part of the healing process in Purisoul’s program, movement is a pivotal part. Not only does it help your physical wellbeing, but it doubles up its effect and strengthens your emotional wellbeing. 3 – Emotional Healing & Trauma recovery

Emotional wellbeing doesn’t mean experiencing only pleasant feelings such as happiness, excitement and love. In fact, unpleasant feelings such as sadness, anger, worry and fear are completely normal and an important part of being human.

Luckily, unpleasant feelings are short lasting and with experience, most people learn to manage these feelings. But sometimes, unpleasant feelings don’t go away, are very strong or get worse with time. This is where Purisoul shines a guiding light on your road to trauma recovery and help you heal. An integral part of your healing journey at Purisoul is your emotional wellbeing. And with our evidence-based methods, you will be well on your way to healing your heart, nourishing your soul and empowering your spirit.

4 – Give it a boost

We all need a helping hand from time to time. I know I do. Your emotional wellbeing is no exception. If you drain your energy from taking care of others, suppress any negative emotions, or burn out at work, your wellbeing will take the damage. So it needs a little boost every now and then. How? I’m glad you asked!

You can boost your emotional wellbeing by being more aware of your emotions and reactions, and learning to express your feelings appropriately. Stop ignoring your emotions because that doesn’t make them go away. Build your emotional intelligence by welcoming all emotions, not just the positive ones.

You can also uplift your emotional wellbeing by shifting your perspective, maintaining a positive outlook and always try your best to think before you act. Trust me, that saved me from a whole lot of misunderstandings, miscommunication and misleading situations.

5 – Put a positive spin on it

Emotional wellbeing allows you to focus on the positive, and manage the negative emotions and feelings you may have in a given situation. This can help you forge stronger relationships with those around you. For instance, the person promoted into the role you had wanted, or the company leader who may have inadvertently overlooked you.

Emotional wellbeing is the ability to produce positive emotions, moods, thoughts, and feelings, and adapt when confronted with adversity and stressful situations. One of its foundations is resilience, which allows you to navigate challenging life events. Think of resilience like a muscle. It flexes and develops the more you use it. Resilience impacts how you face challenges and how you think about the challenges you face.

For example, when you’re passed up for a promotion at work, do you feel motivated to jump into a new professional development program, or do you feel resentful? Are you optimistic that another strong opportunity will come along when the time is right, or do you feel overwhelming disappointment that you missed this particular opportunity?

Emotional wellbeing means feeling good. Being happy experiencing positive emotions like love, joy or compassion, and feeling generally satisfied with life. That’s why emotional wellbeing is an important component of overall wellness. In addition to affecting how we perceive ourselves and the world around us, emotions influence how we feel physically, how much and what we eat, our energy and activity level, and how we relate to other people.

There is no quick fix or shortcut on your journey to emotional wellbeing. You need to be committed to doing the work it’s going to take to come out the other side stronger, better and more empowered!
